about

Solar Panels on the Moon, the first work released under Timothy Isherwood’s new moniker, is a collection of restrained, yet poignant ambient soundscapes. Meditative field recordings permeate throughout the album. Whether Athenian buskers, or Polish street bazaars, ambient sound splices with the weight of visceral, droning chords. The radiance of classic analogue synthesizers lends warmth and gravity to the otherwise transitory album. Elsewhere, affecting compositions, like “Areopagus” and “Mintaka,” use a variety of found instruments to further highlight the collection’s ambiguities.

The album, which features eight original pieces, is a meditation on the inevitable dissolution of earth’s resources and its singular solution, which remains shrouded in simplicity.

The music is joined on the cover by the photography of Elsa Laurent. It is the first of four LP covers by Laurent to be presented by Famous Grapes. The collaboration between FGR and the Paris-based artist began in 2019, during the imprint’s debut Famous Grapes Sessions in Berlin, when Laurent performed an audiovisual live set with sir o sir.

Not unlike the music released by the artists of Famous Grapes, Laurent’s work reveals its subtleties upon further analysis. It’s a study of light, tone and colour that serves to further the ambivalence of the lens rather than assert its objectivity. Fittingly, Laurent’s photos remain open to interpretation, obfuscating the relationship between the subject and its materiality.
